In today’s modern world and age, almost everything is done online. From online messaging, reading, and being informed of the latest trends and news, to businesses having an online presence – the possibilities of the Internet remain endless.

In the world of finance and business, the Internet and online presence play huge roles in reaching out to customers, as well as customers reaching out to businesses. Online transactions on various sites continue to grow throughout the decade. In line with this, it becomes more important to establish a safe and secure payment gateway, as it is an essential part of online businesses. This enables customers to make online transactions and authorize business merchants’ payments.

What is a gateway?

Firstly, a gateway that involves payment is online. It authorizes, investigates, and verifies transactions that happen during business transactions. Essentially, it is the backbone of online markets.

How Does a Gateway Work?

Once a customer buys or orders something through an online seller, the information the customer shares are then encrypted and is then transferred to the merchant’s side, which is the web server, and this process is done through SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Encryption.

The merchant forwards the information to the payment gateway. The information is once again transferred to a payment processor, which the is of the merchant’s acquiring bank. It is again forwarded to the car association, where the payment is validated.

As complicated as this process may seem, it happens in a simple click of a button, and happens no more than a minute. Below you will be able to find a flowchart diagram on how it works:

Collection

This is when the customer picks the items or services that they intend to purchase. Subsequently, this is when the customer enters the necessary credit card information and credentials in the payment gateway page. The information entered it then sent to the payment gateway.

Authentication

Once the information is sent to the payment gateway, the payment gateway then collects and verifies it, on whether or not it is correct and accurate. After which, the information is then sent to the customer’s bank through a protected link to protect the information.

Authorization

The moment the bank receives the information, verification occurs again, as the bank checks the card’s credentials and conducts a cross-check on the available funds in the customer’s bank account to see if it is still good for paying this particular transaction. After this stage, the bank authorizes the transaction, in which the result of “Approved” or “Rejected” is displayed.

Settlement

Finally, after the previous steps, the bank then makes the payment to the payment gateway, with the amount to be paid during the transaction taken into consideration. The amount is settled by the payment gateway to the merchant seller’s bank account online – with the payment settlement terms – which were decided by the payment gateway, service provider, and the merchant. The transaction is then complete.

How to Choose the Best Gateway for You

In choosing which gateway to use, you must always consider the Payment Card Industry Security Standard (PCI DSS). PCI DDS applies to companies that accept credit card payments.

You must choose a gateway that hosts the data securely, with a PCI hosting provider. To help with this, PCI compliant companies must install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect cardholder data.

They must not use vendor-supplied default system passwords and other security parameters. You must use encryption when transferring data. The use of security systems, ID restrictions, data restrictions, monitoring cardholder data, regularly testing security systems, and anti-virus software is vital and must be practiced.

In our very Internet-based world, it is very easy for information to get into the wrong hands. In choosing a service provider, that of payment gateway, they must be PCI compliant.
